Harald Haas from the University of Edinburgh, has for some time worked with Lifelike - Light-Fi - which uses light to transmit data. He demonstrated this at a TED conference back in 2011. Light can contain 10,000 times more data - compared to radio waves. It requires the standard bulb and fluorescent light bulbs saves switching to new LED bulbs that can blink quickly pict - billions of times per second in order to work. Ordinary incandescent bulbs and CFLs gas does not blink, and can NOT be used. LED bulbs seems like laser light - the blink quickly - billions of times per second. You have LED bulb as the "sender" and must then have a receiver that can capture light and turn it into data signal again. The camera of a mobile can be used - or another sensor that can receive light and convert it into data. See the video where Harald Haas from the University of Edingburgh demonstrates how Lifelike works at TED conference.
There are advantages and disadvantages of using light to send and receive data. An advantage with lya is of course that the light does not pass through a wall - as a radio wave can do with a decrease of the signal. It may also be advantageous that the signal is ONLY within the 4 walls of the house so hackers can not so easily pick up signals from your indoor router that only you have access to! However, a clear advantage is that we have light overal
