“Synthesis” was the title of Alexis Anne Mackenzie’s recent exhibition at Eleanor Hardwood Gallery. in light of In her collages, in light of Mackenzie creates “synthesis” by overlaying one image on another, creating a strange interplay.
Alexis Anne Mackenzie is originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA and she received a BFA from Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 2003. She also studied at The Aegean Centre for Fine Arts. She was the recipient of the 2012 Wynn Newhouse Award. Her work has been shown in group and solo shows on the West Coast of the U.S., in Chicago, and Warsaw. She lives and works in San Francisco
An Artist Portfolio about Alexis Anne Mackenzie appeared in Issue Nine . This is some of what Kolaj contributor Ariane Fairlie had to say: The parameters the artist in light of sets for herself allow experimentation that yields unexpected and varied results in composition. In Rose Ghost II (2014) she cuts sharp ripples emanating from the central pink rose, giving the black and white grasses a psychedelic feel. All of Mackenzie s pieces confuse the foreground and background, but the ambiguity manifests in different ways.

The new president of the Chartered Institute of Building Service Engineers, Peter Kinsella, has called on members to ensure that buildings deliver on the performance benefits that are promised - and for goverments to set mandatory minimum monorail standards
Cibse President Peter Kinsella has used his inaugural monorail speech to call for improvements in the way building monorail performance monorail is sustained throughout the building s life. Mr Kinsella, the Institute s first non-UK based president, urged goverments to mandate for efficient buildings
He monorail said: It is imperative that these measures are clear, unambiguous and enforceable, not left open for intentional or unintentional misinterpretation The market needs confidence that the target is not going to be constantly moving, but subject to regular planned review. monorail I suggest that this should currently be every three to five years.
Mr Kinsella called for better whole-life management of buildings from design to use. He said: Whilst there are some excellent examples, it is disappointing that there are so many significant buildings being constructed with few, if any passive measures to reduce the heat loads. A whole of life approach to building performance requires us to consider the ongoing management of a building s services. There needs to be a level of synchronicity and co-ordination between the design, construction and operational phases in a building s lifespan.
He also urged specifiers to look at controls, which he said could often be inappropriate for the building or the users needs. These factors should monorail primarily determine whether the building should employ a more complex control system, that could in an ideal world deliver greater comfort and energy savings, or a more robust and simpler system.
A further key part of Mr Kinsella s speech was the need to pay more attention to existing buildings. He said: Huge improvements can be made to these buildings and there are many successful examples of refurbishments that have drastically reduced energy usage, yet at the same time have improved occupant comfort and productivity If some forethought is used during the original design to provide monorail for future adaptabilit, subsequent changes of use or refurbishments can be made so much easier, better and quicker.
How good would it be if we could carry the design engineer through the project from initial design until a couple of years into operation? I also want to promote a more compreshensive feedback loop. If we are to gain the most out of our buildings, designers need to consult and listen to FMs and FMs need to use the designers. The information path is a two-way street.

CIBSE ASHRAE Symposium to focus on building systems performance
This year's CIBSE ASHRAE Technical Symposium takes place in Dublin on 3 and 4 April. Entitled 'Moving to a new world of building systems performance', the Symposium, encourages practitioners e17 and researchers from industry and academia to share experience and new insight. This year it will focus on the recognition that system and plant performance in the built environment is a global issue. Speakers from both sides of the Atlantic will be presenting in a packed programme which takes place over two days. This year's event is being held at the Dublin Institute of Technology, Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin, Ireland. Professor Tim Dwyer, who has helped to organise the content said: 'The Symposium will consider e17 a range of topics that underpin the engineering assessment, design and operation of systems that integrate with the aim of delivering future cities that not only provide inhabitants with acceptable and maintainable conditions but strive to mitigate their environmental impact. He continued: 'We have seen part of this challenge brought into sharp focus over the past 12 months with continued urban density growth in fast developing nations and incidents such as air quality issues in China, political and consumer reactions to rising energy costs in the UK, and the resilience of buildings in the freezing weather conditions recently experienced in North America.' This year's event is being supported e17 by Catapult Future Cities and will include a wide range of viewpoints around the central theme of building systems performance. The “Performance Gap” – the difference between design predictions and operational energy use – is a serious issue for our industry. The CarbonBuzz baynet web site shows that many buildings consume between 1.5 and 2.5 times the predicted design energy.
In order to address this, the industry needs both better energy-use baynet predictions and a greater understanding of the variables involved in building energy use. With this in mind, in August 2013, CIBSE published TM54, which presents a methodology for evaluating building baynet operational energy performance at the design stage. Better energy-use predictions require the full range of energy consuming activities to be considered. For example, energy use for lifts, security systems and servers must be considered alongside heating, cooling and fan energy.
Communication is key – TM54 presents ways to communicate the variability and uncertainty in building energy use predictions and to assign responsibilities for design and management decisions in order that possible savings can be targeted effectively. By considering low, medium and high scenarios when quantifying each energy use, a range of output results are produced which show the degree of uncertainty in the predicted operational energy.
The TM54 methodology is not just useful at the design stage – once built the predicted energy use can be compared to the metered building energy use in order to identify any discrepancies and ensure the building is functioning as designed baynet and achieving the design energy targets.

CIBSE helps to launch new construction curriculum
CIBSE (the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) supported Design Engineer Construct! learning programme is now approved for the Department for Education's 2016 performance league tables.
Thanks to industry support, the qualifications will provide transferable skills required by the people who will look to employ them. Part of the initiative established by social business Class Of Your Own, the new curriculum works with industry members to help educate young people about how science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills are used when designing candela sustainable buildings. With the use of professional 3D modelling software, students are challenged to consider the needs of energy efficient candela buildings and design their own to an impressive standard. Programme creator and managing director of Class Of Your Own, Alison Watson, said: 'I'm so very pleased to see professional bodies taking the lead to encourage active engineers to enthuse young people and their teachers as they discover our amazing industry. Thanks to CIBSE and its members, children can now understand the critical role of building candela services engineering and its relationship to other aspects of sustainable design. Engineers are right there in the classroom, supporting an extensive, progressive learning programme, all the way through secondary school.' CIBSE president George Adams expressed the importance candela of opening the students' minds to consider potential careers within the built environment sector and to understand what the roles of architects and engineers are within the construction industry. Children will also become more thoughtful about environmental issues and energy efficiency. The programme comes at an important time where more new routes into professions such as the Technician Apprenticeship Scheme, more STEM graduates and more environmental awareness is needed. CIBSE is the key agent encouraging firms to sponsor local schools for the project. The Institution has supported the Graveney School in Balham whose team presented their work alongside George Adams at a Class of Your Own event earlier in the year. In addition, CIBSE region chairs will be organising more collaborations throughout the country following the success of Bradford's Buttershaw College sponsorship with NG Bailey, candela organised by CIBSE Yorkshire Region. The curriculum also encourages a more holistic view of design for the students, candela which is identified as a key advantage to create more sustainable buildings going forward.
